Reef fishing is a great way to get out on the water for a few hours and catch some fantastic eating fish. Most of the restaurants in Key Colony Beach and Marathon will cook your catch for you, which is a wonderful Keys experience.
Reef fishing in the wintertime usually means targeting Yellowtail Snapper. Yellowtail Snapper is not only fun to catch they are also delicious to eat. They are the perfect size fish for beginners and young ones. Captain Wayne uses light tackle which fits comfortably in children’s hands and allows for the snapper to put up a good fight.
When the wind is right while reef fishing in the wintertime, Captain Wayne will fly a kite to place baits far back behind the boat to target big King Mackerel and Sailfish. When the current is right he will also drop a rod to the bottom targeting Grouper and Sharks.
In the late winter and Spring, reef fishing can also mean catching Cobia, Mutton Snapper and Wahoo. In the summertime, Captain Wayne will focus on offshore fishing for Mahi and Tuna but during the Mangrove Snapper spawn in July and August he will often take customers to the reef first thing in the morning to catch a limit of Mangrove Snapper before heading offshore.
Reef fishing can successfully be accomplished on a half-day as the reef is just a short ride from where Captain Wayne is docked. If you are fishing a 3/4 or a full day you can combine reef fishing with wreck or offshore action as well. Contact Captain Wayne for more details and availability.
